The Expectation Gap:
Setting Realistic Goals for Children from Hard Histories

why does my child act so much younger than their age? Why do they struggle with tasks they “should” know how to do? In this foundational course April Ficklin helps caregivers understand the “expectation gap” the difference between a child’s chronological age and their stage of emotional, developmental, or brain-based functioning. Participants learn how trauma impacts development, why structure and connection must work together, and how to scaffold skills in a way that reduces shame and increases success. April offers a simple visual model for expanding (and sometimes shrinking) boundaries, so parents can teach independence without overwhelming their child. The result: calmer homes, clearer expectations, and a stronger parent-child relationship.
